How I went from exhausted, sick, powerless and reacting to my child to thriving, energized and in control of my emotional state, my health, and my life!
Before I became a sought-after emotional wellness and conscious parenting expert, I was living a “conditioned” and “programmed” life ruled by how I thought I “should” be in order to feel worthy and accepted in this world.
It was hard work living up to some ideal I didn’t even consciously create for myself!
I was exhausted and sick.
I was reactive and hard on myself, and my child.
And, I felt helpless to change any of it.
From diagnosis to helpless
Diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME, Fibromyalgia, Thyroid Disorder, Adrenal Fatigue and later Lyme Disease, I felt like my illness owned me and I couldn’t get out from under it.
It took away my zest for life and left me feeling hopeless, alone, and with a serious hit to my self-esteem.
I tried everything to get better - I changed my diet, took many supplements, did many detox regimens and holistic treatments.
But nothing worked.
The unfulfilled years of parenting
Meanwhile, no one could have prepared me for the rough start of parenting.
From a baby who barely ate, slept and deemed “failure to thrive” to a growing child struggling with Anxiety, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Oppositional Defiance, Sensory Processing disorder and Autism…I was challenged to the extreme.
Often hand-cuffed by the fear of his health and future, I spent much time in hyper vigilance trying to fix my child.
Stuck in reactive anger patterns, I secretly saw my child as an “imperfection” that threatened the safety net of perfection I had built around me.
I was failing as a parent, and I was blaming my child for it.
The discovery that changed everything
As I went down the path of trying to understand what it truly means to have great health and achieve the inner peace I desperately wanted, I discovered a wise, best-selling author, Wayne Dyer who helped me realize that the way we perceive ourselves and our life is what causes stress in our bodies and unhappiness in our minds.
Trying to change the things around me (my child, my husband, my food, my supplements) was just not working to change my health or my parenting frustrations.
I needed to find a way to embody this powerful way of being…and the realization that I could empower myself to change how I perceived myself, and the world around me.
I could create the way I wanted to feel about myself, my child, and my life!
I had this power!
From programmed to AUTHENTICITY
So, I embarked upon this path of mind-body-soul healing, and learned that the mind and body are indeed connected, and our thoughts, beliefs and emotions greatly influence our physical health.
I became more aware of the programmed belief systems I was operating under.
Beliefs such as:
“I must do what others expect of me”
(in order to be loved),
“I must help others at the expense of myself”
(in order to be worthy), and
“I must hide my emotions as they are not acceptable”
(in order to be accepted and stay connected to others).
Ultimately, I had to un-learn my programmed, limiting ways of being that were causing me to be in a state of chronic stress, affecting both my health and my ability to have a calm, connected relationship with my child.
Going down this path of healing took me - for the first time in my life - to my true Authentic Self...this part of me from which I could naturally draw power and life force energy to thrive!
Changing my relationship with myself
Through my healing journey, I also realized the crucial importance of how I was in relationship with myself.
I could not accept my emotions or acknowledge my true needs.
I was hard on myself, with a wicked inner critic that shamed me for anything I did that was not in line with perfection.
I had to learn how to develop self-compassion and love and accept all parts of me – the dark and the light - so that my body could feel safe enough to heal.
I had to develop a more compassionate, supportive and caring relationship with myself, where I could be with my emotions and nurture myself back into greater health, inner peace and a deeper connection with myself and the people I loved most.
The path to my greatest health and most connected relationships
The deeper I went into healing my emotional health, the more my body responded with vitality and energy for life.
The more connected and accepting I became of myself, the more I was able to connect with and accept my strong-willed child, creating the loving, calm relationship I always wanted for us, and the inner peace I craved for myself.
The more I trusted in the Universe, and developed faith in the growth experience of this life, the more I saw the experience of my illness and my relationship with my son as a gift.
A gift that would teach me how to become my greatest and most purposeful self!
As a result my body healed, and my relationship with my son healed.

Afshan is a gifted coach. Let me tell you why I say that. I am a person who has had a strong inner critic all my life. It’s particularly loud right now as I set up my own business and I really needed to find a way to tame it so that I can be productive and focused. Afshan and I did a session where we explored where it was coming from, and she got the “real me” to talk to this other voice inside of me. I had a breakthrough experience where at some point, I came to the realization that my inner critic is like a young, inexperienced, and scared version of myself who is fearful of taking risks. The real me is a person who loves to try new things and expand my knowledge and experience continuously, so you can see why we are at odds. I suddenly had an overwhelming feeling of two leaden doors in my chest burst open and let an intense light flood in. It was something I have never experienced before, and possibly never will again.
